Nature of the Lake Sevan Catchment Basin

Many endemic species of plants and animals inhabit the territory of the Lake Sevan catchment basin. Indeed, the combination of different climatic zones with typical elements, such as dry desert, alpine meadows and broadleaf trees, actually model the composition of the soil, flora, fauna and biodiversity.

The land of the Lake basin ridges is dominated with brown soils, high stoniness, carbonate soils or light acid soils.

As a matter of fact, endemism of flora of the Lake Sevan basin increases its very uniqueness. The flora itself is quite diverse. There are about 1,600 species of vascular plants in the basin, of which 48 are listed in the Red Book of Armenia and 6 are endemic species themselves.
